Individual Dental Plans

There are two types of plans. A group plan which you get through your employer. The other one is the individual dental plan that is offered for those who need dental cover for themselves. Having a good dental insurance allows you to afford the expensive cost of dental health care. It is important to have a great dental plan.

Individual dental plans do not work the same way as the other types of plans. They are a lot more costly that the groups plans that employers offer.

However an individual plan has its advantages too. If you get the individual dental plan you can choose the features you want and your options are not limited as in a group plan.

How dental insurance works depends on the policies and plans of the providers. Indemnity plans and managed care plans are the two major plans.

Managed care plans offer inexpensive services but you can only choose a dentist from the list given by the provider. With this plan it is not necessary to pay a deductible and it is cheaper than an indemnity plan. Managed care plans include Dental Health Maintenance Organization (DHMO), Dental Point of Service (POS), and Dental Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).

Indemnity plans offer better choices and the client can choose a dentist. The client will be paying a monthly premium with is fixed by the service providers. The providers reimburse or pay the dentist for the services rendered. The amount can be different depending on the plan. Insurance companies cover about 50%-80% of the fees and the client will pay the balance of the fees.

Several companies offer individual dental plans. Some dental insurance providers that offer this include SafeGuard Health Enterprises, Delta Dental, CAREington International and United Concordia Companies.

These days, fewer companies offer dental plans for their employees. This is why insurance companies are now offering individual dental plans. Choosing a plan will depend on many factors including your dental health. If you have healthy teeth, there is available an inexpensive plan that includes basic dental care. A plan like this will cover X-ray costs and cleaning. If you have a lot of dental problems, it is better to go for a full coverage dental plan.

Individual dental plans are not available through employers. They are only available to individuals and that is why it is more costly. If you do not visit the dentist often, you can select a plan where the premium is lower and the deductibles and co-insurance are higher. If you have lots of dental issues and often visit the dentist, select a plan where the deductibles and co-insurance are low.
